RENA Salvage – Svitzer& Smit
Svitzer and SMIT were engaged by Maritime NZ and on behalf of the vessel’s owners MSC via the vessel’s insurers, The Swedish Club. UNIMAR already heavily involved with the immediate post incident response with Braemar Howells; identified a suitable AHTS in Tahiti, the Go Canopus and submitted this vessel as a major component as offshore towing vessel and oil recovery support.
- On agreement with Svitzer, UNIMAR mobilised Go Canopus from Papeete to Tauranga and with its partner, NZOS, installed a competent and experienced New Zealand crew.
- On arrival Go Canopus immediately took up a tow line and was tethered to the vessel to support the casualty while it was being heavily pummelled in the ocean swell.

- UNIMAR were a leading component of a multi-faceted response and recovery team. Working closely with lead salvors Svitzer and SMIT and Maritime New Zealand; we quickly assembled our salvage management team and commenced marine support operations .
Work Scope on the Project Included:
- Towline support and wreck position monitoring
- Assist in the recovery of Heavy Fuel Oil
- Towing and anchor handling support to crane barge SMIT Borneo
